iOS 4 features: Sync multiple IMAP accounts with Notes

With iOS 4, the built-in Notes app gets the ability to sync with multiple IMAP accounts, including MobileMe and Gmail. When you set up MobileMe or Gmail (not via Google Sync/ActiveSync/Exchange but via the Gmail button) there’s a toggle to turn notes sync on or off.

If you enable notes sync for multiple accounts, you get a new Accounts button at the top left of the Notes app. Tapping it takes you to a new screen where you can choose to view All Notes, just the notes on your iPhone, or just the notes that are synced via IMAP to your email account(s).

Those notes then appear in your desktop and web-based IMAP clients as well, like Apple’s Mac Mail.app (in Marker Felt, ugh!) and Gmail.com.

If you’re using multiple IMAP Notes accounts, let us know how it’s working for you. For more features, see our complete iOS 4 walkthrough.

Scoble death-grips Android Captivate before Apple

AT&T Captivate vs iPhone 4 death grip

We’re guessing Apple will get an AT&T Captivate (or similar Samsung Galaxy S-class device) death-grip video up sooner or later, but in the meantime… Scoble to the rescue!

He shows both devices in the same area on the same network dropping bars and, he says, calls. We get it. Manufacturers aren’t perfect. Phones aren’t perfect. How many more videos will we get before this meme dies like bars beneath watery flesh?

And no, it’s not an outsource, just yet another video making its hits off the antennagate saga where no phone, on no carrier is safe. Now before anyone cries “yeah, but iPhone 4 only needs a death-touch, not a death-grip!“, we’ve already seen other videos showing the Galaxy getting killed by a single finger as well.

Of course, iPhone 4 is iPhone 4 in every market and on every carrier, so if anyone has a problem it’s very easy to find out about everyone else who has that problem. With other devices, if someone has a problem with a Captivate will that get tracked to someone else with a problem on a Vibrant on T-Mobile, or a Galaxy in Europe?

No doubt Consumer Reports is on top of that.

Belkin Max Sleeve for iPad – accessory review

YouTube Link

The Belkin Max Sleeve for iPad not only does a great job of protecting your iPad, but it gives you a little extra room to stick some of your accessories in as well. The case is made of a fabric material that is pleated on the front. This is what allows you to have a zipper compartment in the front to stick your other gadgets in.

The inside of the case is a foamy white mesh material. It’s extremely soft so you don’t have to worry about it scratching your iPad. It’s also a loose fit, which means you won’t damage your iPad while taking it out and putting it back in the case. There’s always a down side to a case not fitting snugly though, and that’s if you forget to zip it and pick up the case by the wrong end, it’s very likely your iPad could go crashing to the floor. We didn’t have this happen with this case, but I could see that being a problem as the material on the inside doesn’t offer any grip.

The way we cast that fear aside was to put a silicon case on the iPad and then put it in the Belkin Max Sleeve. The silicon provides the grip and solves the issue. I know a lot of people wouldn’t want to buy 2 cases so it isn’t an ideal situation. My advice? It’s a great case worth the money, just be careful how you pick it up, or make sure you always zip it up.

Other than the sliding out of the case issue, this is a great case and well worth the money. It offers superior protection in an unobtrusive form factor. Even though it’s small, it still lets you stow away other objects, which is nice. If there’s any girls out there like me that hate carrying around a laptop/iPad bag and a purse, this is awesome. Simply throw your phone, credit cards, etc in the front pouch and you’re good to go.  You can purchase the Belkin Max Sleeve for iPad from the TiPb Accessory Store.

Pros

Allows for extra storage room in the front pocket

Material on the outside is easy to grip on to

Material on inside won’t scratch your iPad

Cons

Inside material is a little slick so forgetting to zip up could cause an iPad to fall out

Zipper on front pocket is sometimes a bit hard to pull

Plunderland for iPhone- app review

Plunderland is Apple’s App of the Week this week. Does it deserve it? Yes and no. Developer JohnnyTwoShoes has made a solid effort to bring pillaging across the sea in the hands of eager gamers.

The premise of Plunderland is you are a ghost with pirates that sail across the sea to attack and sink enemy ships, pillage tribes people and take money from their monuments then make it to the next port. Sounds fun? Well, get used to it because that is what you do over, and over, and over again with little variety. Call me a stinker, but I don’t see the allure with this game.

Sure, the water physics are nice. You tilt the iPhone left or right to make your boat move in that direction. When there is a storm, etc, the water behaves in a more erratic manor, making maneuvering more difficult. Once you are on the high seas, you come across your enemy; the British warships. You have a couple ways to take them out. First is to use your ships cannon. You have a nifty way of angling the cannon to shoot your targets, just move your finger along the bottom and you will get a reticule via a line that helps your aiming. Release your finger and you fire your cannonballs. Second, you can use the enemies cannonballs against themselves. Before the enemy launches an attack, the cannon will puff smoke, that is your cue to ready your finger and deflect the cannonball back upon the enemy ship and with luck, split it in two!

I know, I make it sound exhilarating, and it is the first two or three times you do it. Sadly, Plunderland does little to keep your attention. Future attacks add blimps and more, but the fun is gone by that point. The attacking villagers is a simple “tap, tap. tap” on the totems to get money and fling some villagers around in an effort to extract some more dough. Again… zzzz…

There is nice upgrade system though, you can upgrade your ship, cannons and bowsprits by earning said money above. The game has excellent promise. The controls, physics and graphical style all lend them selves to a success. However, the bland  I really, really wanted to like this game, being highlighted on Apple’s App Store, but alas, mateys, I just can’t bring myself to recommend this lack-luster treasure.

[$2.99- iTunes Link]

UPDATE: I had a delightful Twitter chat with the developers. I explained that I had played 50% thorough the game and became unchallenged with the levels and objectives. They understood and are looking at a way to unlock the more exciting and complex levels earlier for more “hardcore” gamers. I also said that when I find the time to complete the game 100%, I would update this review to include my findings. I am hopeful that by the time I do this, they will have some new content available. You can follow the developer on Twitter here.

TiPb iPhone 2-star rated
Pros

Great graphics
Solid frame-rate
Good physics engine
Upgrade system

Cons

Very, very, very repetitive
Takes a while to become a challenge (the end of the second chapter)

Android Captivate and Vibrant get reviewed — the competition

AT&T and T-Mobile bring the Android competition with the Samsung Galaxy S-class Captivate and Vibrant

Phil Nickinson, my counterpart over at sibling site Android Central has just posted his AT&T Android Captivate review and T-Mobile Android Vibrant review, the latest, greatest US GSM competition to our own iPhone 4. They’re both Galaxy S-class devices, but one of the strengths of Android is the ability for manufacturers like Samsung and carriers like AT&T and T-Mobile (and Verizon and Sprint when their versions launch) to modify and customize the hardware and software to make their devices distinct.

Ally already posted her thoughts on the AT&T Captivate vs. iPhone 4, so if you’re trying to decide between the two, or between them and the T-Mobile Vibrant, give Phil’s a read to and then come back here and let us know what you think.

White iPhone 4 delays caused by light leak?

white iPhone 4 delays

The Street is claiming that the reason Apple has delayed the white iPhone 4 until “later this year” is due to light leaking around the edges of the glass. This according to the ever popular “person familiar with”, in this case the manufacturing process.

As the source described it, if it were a metal or plastic material, a simple coating would fill in the gaps and block the internal light. Glass is an entirely different issue.

Take this with a white iPhone 4-sized grain of salt, of course.

Thanks to the Retina display, everything you see and do on iPhone 4 looks amazing. Text in books, web pages, and email is crisp at any size. Images in movies and photos are stunning at almost any angle. That’s because the Retina display’s pixel density is so high, your eye is unable to distinguish individual pixels.

In a word, resolutionary.

By developing pixels a mere 78 micrometers wide, Apple engineers were able to pack four times the number of pixels into the same 3.5-inch (diagonal) screen found on earlier iPhone models. The resulting pixel density of iPhone 4 — 326 pixels per inch — makes text and graphics look smooth and continuous at any size.

Brilliant, no matter how you look at it.—-

The iPhone 4 Retina display uses technology called IPS (in-plane switching) — the same technology used in the Apple LED Cinema Display and iPad — to achieve a wider viewing angle than on typical LCDs. Which means you can hold iPhone 4 almost any way you want and still get a brilliant picture. That’s perfect when you’re sharing photos with a friend or moving your iPhone around while playing a driving or flying game. In addition, the Retina display offers four times the contrast ratio of previous models, so whites are brighter, blacks are darker, and everything is more beautiful.

Advancements in the glass. And under it.

Made from the same materials used in helicopters and high-speed trains, the Retina display glass is chemically strengthened to be harder, more scratch resistant, and more durable than ever. The glass also features an oil-resistant coating that helps keep the screen clean.

The Retina display includes LED backlighting and an ambient light sensor that intelligently adjusts the brightness of the screen for optimal viewing and battery life. When you lift iPhone to your ear for a phone call, a proximity sensor immediately turns off the display to save power and prevent accidental dialing.

However, in the process of application, you have again what difficulties? This software can help you.

EnlargeYour own personal big screen.

A beautiful 9.7-inch high-resolution display makes iPad perfect for watching any kind of video: from HD movies and TV shows to podcasts and music videos. Since iPad is essentially one big screen — with no distracting keypad or buttons — you feel completely immersed in whatever you’re watching. And you can keep watching for up to 10 hours, thanks to the lithium-polymer battery in iPad.*

Buy or rent a movie on the go.

Tap the iTunes icon and you’ll find thousands of movies — including HD movies — ready and waiting. Tap and browse around. When you find a movie you like, watch a preview. Whatever you buy or rent downloads right to your iPad video library, so you’ll be at the movies in minutes. You can also catch up on your favorite TV shows, watch music videos, and download podcasts.

Control the action.

The iPad display features edge-to-edge glass with Multi-Touch technology. So you have more control than ever before. Browse your video library by poster art in grid view. When you see something you want to watch, tap it and it starts playing instantly. Turn iPad sideways to watch in widescreen view. Double-tap to switch between widescreen and full-screen views. Even tap to browse through chapters.

Sync with iTunes.

When you connect iPad to your Mac or PC, whatever you downloaded on the go can sync to the iTunes library on your computer. It works the other way around, too. Movies, TV shows, and video from iTunes on your computer can sync to your iPad. And syncing to iTunes is a great way to back up video on your iPad

Movies on the fly.

Say you’re on an airplane. Pull out your iPad, prop it on your tray table using the optional iPad Case, and fill your flight with movies. You can watch up to 10 hours of video on iPad, so even the longest flight will really fly by. Because the iPad display uses IPS technology, it has an amazingly wide 178° viewing angle. So you can see the display clearly even off to the side. IPS and the powerful built-in speaker also make iPad perfect for watching with a friend (or two) when you land.

Sync with iTunes.

When you connect iPad to your Mac or PC, whatever you downloaded on the go can sync to the iTunes library on your computer. It works the other way around, too. Verizon not interested in iPhone 4?

Maybe, just maybe, these pesky iPhone 4 on Verizon rumors will finally fade away as Droid Life reports Big Read is fully committed to Android and their current high-end lineup of devices like the new Droid X.

“And the second part of the meeting (and most important to us) was to announce that they will not be interested in the iPhone 4 (as of now) and are putting full effort behind Android and the new lineup of Droid devices.”

In case you were wondering, the first part of the meeting was about a advertising adjustment where the “Wireless” tag is removed from “Verizon Wireless” but we just care about the iPhone part.

Personally I’ve felt since the release of the Motorola Droid last year that it was pretty evident Verizon was standing firm behind the (more controllable?) Android platform and it would be a long while before any iPhone landed on the carrier.

Rene on the other hand feels Verizon is using a bit of reverse phycology in order to get customers to stop waiting for iPhone and start buying Droids. Now if Droid Life is correct, that would mean all of those CDMA iPhones would be headed to Sprint right? You have to love rumors.

You be the judge, has Verizon really given up on the iPhone? Sound off in the comments!

Most people think of music when they think about their iPod. But this remarkable little device can do much more than just play your favorite tunes. Learn how to get the most out of your iPod-the incredibly popular somewhat pricey must-have gadget of the year.

For those of you who may not know, an iPod is the portable, personal digital audio player manufactured by Apple Computers, the people who bring you Mac computers. Introduced to the market in 2001, skeptics were unsure whether or not consumers would be willing to shell out $399 for a new gadget. The skeptics fears were proven unfounded as the iPod became an instant hit. Now several models later, the iPod has become a cultural icon with its catchy advertising and sleek, sexy looks. People everywhere are using their iPods to maintain, organize, categorize and store massive music collections. The iPod makes it easy to take your entire music collection with you wherever you go. All around the neighborhood, pedestrians and passengers alike can be seen bobbing their heads for no apparent reason until they approach and you can make out the ubiquitous white earbuds worn by iPod users. Listening to your collection of music on your iPod is great but is that all you can do with an iPod? Surprisingly, this amazing little piece of equipment has many more functions.

-Listen to audio books.
You can use your iPod to enrich your mind, not just turn it to mush listening to head-banging music. From the latest suspense thrillers to always-popular romance, many genres of books are available on Apples iTunes Music Store through their affiliation with audiobooks.com. Want to improve your life? Try downloading a copy of “Purpose Driven Life” by Rick Warren or snag yourself a free copy of the King James Bible online. Instead of relying on multiple CD's or unwieldy, unreliable audiocassette tapes, enjoy listening to your favorite books even when you are busy doing something else such as the laundry or going for a run. What were you thinking about while you were putting those clothes in the washer anyway?

-Play games.
Depending on the model of iPod you own, you have at least one game on its hard drive. All users have a game called “Brick”, reminiscent of an old arcade game called “Breakout”. Depending on the model of iPod you have, you may also have the following games: “Parachute”, “Solitaire” and “Music Quiz”. And all in a very discreet package. So if you feel a little bored during that next employee meeting…

-Store non-music files.
The iPod can be used to store all kinds of files from your computer. Some have suggested that the iPod is a cost-effective alternative to other removable hard drive options to allow users to save their files for back-up. Critics, however, will point out that the small size and portability may lead to greater chance of the iPod and therefore all of your files, being stolen. Even more tragic, filling up your iPod with silly documents will hamper your ability to fill the device with as much music as you can possibly cram on there. But in a pinch if you need some back-up file storage, your iPod can do the trick.

-Organize your life.
Just like PDA's were supposed to organize our ever-complicated and busy lives, the iPod could also be pressed into service for this purpose. Your iPod can store a copy of the user's information from the address book to help keep up with contacts. And what about your calendar? Your iPod can also store information from iCal, the calendar function on the Mac to keep track of all those upcoming appointments and meetings. The downside? The information, once stored on your iPod can not be edited on your iPod. You must return to the original program, make any desired changes and then re-sync the iPod. This minor point could be quite a problem if say, you are at a party and want to jot down the contact information of someone you find intriguing. You would not be able to do so because you could not add any information to the address book on your iPod. So you are stuck searching for a pen and writing on a crumpled up napkin after all!

-Record voice memos or record lectures.
This capability of your iPod requires what is known as an iPod accessory. There are literally thousands of third-party company applications to make your iPod more useful. One of these is a voice recorder that can be attached to your iPod to allow you to create digital recordings on your iPod. This function can be handy if you tend to come up with ideas in awkward places such as when you are driving or if you would like a tape-free way to record interesting and/or mandatory lectures. Griffin Technology produces the iTalk for this purpose. Some have even suggested the iTalk can be used to record your very own iPod radio show called a podcast. But creating podcasts are a topic for another article!

-Listen to radio broadcasts and Internet Pod Casts.
Yes, you news junkies can listen to your favorite talk radio shows at your leisure on your iPod. How? Once again, you will have to rely on an inexpensive third-party solution such as Audio Hijack from Rogue Amoeba. With this or other software, you can record streaming audio from any broadcast that comes on the computer, such as KRLA in Los Angeles, and save it in your iTunes library to listen to on your iPod later. Pesky 9 to 5 job interfering with your talk radio schedule? It doesn't have to because you can record digitally and listen anytime. And what about non-commercial, individually produced podcasts? iPod users such as your self can create radio shows specifically to be listened to on the iPod. Recently featured in the New York Times, podcasts are becoming very popular. The topics of these shows run the gamut from Christianity to you-guessed-it, iPods and come in a variety of styles and quality levels. Lists of available podcasts can be found at iPodder.com and other sites. Downloading is straightforward and explained on the podcast sites. Find your favorite topic and enjoy!

-Listen to music in your car.
Third-party accessories that allow you to listen to your iPod in the car so you can jam or learn while driving are available. Docking stations that attach to your center console connect with your car's audio system through the tape deck to allow what's on your iPod to be heard out loud in your car. This is much safer than having earbuds on while driving. Although you may look cool wearing the iPod's fashionable earpieces, not being able to hear the cop trying to pull you over could prove to be more than embarrassing. Some docking stations and some models of iPod will also allow you to charge your iPod while you are using it in the car. And if you have it like “that”, you can get your iPod seamlessly integrated into your BMW for the ultimate driving experience (or at least you can dream about it!)

-Listen to music out loud-without headphones.
Your iPod can be connected to mini-external speakers, a device such as the iTalk mentioned above or to your stereo system (for instance, if you are lucky enough to own a Bose system). Mini-speakers can be inexpensive or top-of-the-line models. So for the times that you do not want to be rude and make people think that you are not paying attention to them, hook up your iPod to external speakers and share the love.

-Store and share your photos.
If you are lucky enough to have the state-of-the-art, top-of-the-line iPod Photo, you can enter a whole new realm of photo album sharing. Instead of carrying around bulky photo albums with pictures of Fido and the kids, you can whip out your sleek iPod Photo and brag away. Another neat feature- you can view the cover art for your music as you choose it from your collection. All this is in full, gorgeous color. Nice, very nice.

There are so many cool ways that you can use your iPod if you just start thinking about what you want and then research your options. Not just for music, the iPod has revolutionized the way that we look at portable digital media.
